- 1814 – John Ramsbottom, superintendent of the Manchester and Birmingham Railway, is born (d. 1897).
- 1915 – William Cornelius Van Horne, who oversaw the major construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway and was the youngest superintendent of the Illinois Central Railroad, dies (b. 1843).
- 1972 – Revenue service begins on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system in the San Francisco Bay Area.
- 2001 – The Port Authority Trans-Hudson station and tunnel under the World Trade Center are destroyed and the next closest station, Exchange Place (pictured), is closed due to flooding, both as a result of the September 11 attacks.
