Whats with the vandalism?

I just fixed changing all the "Sonic's" back to "mario's". Whats with this?

You can revert all changes by going to history and editing the correct version of the page. That way it's not a big deal to delete vandalism.--Zxcvbnm 00:21, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism

This page was vandalised within the last 24 days, so the page has been reverted to the latest edit before the vandalism. It should be fine now. Just keep an eye out for more vandalism. --Matt 06:20, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism 2

Who the **** would put a giant penis as an unlockable character? And big rigs? and the others? The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.166.214.217 (talk • contribs) .

Seriously, people should just stop questioning what is obvious vandalism. We know what is true and what has been edited to make the artical look like crap, so I don't see any point in worring about it. Just let the editors do their job. (This is comming from a respected fourmer at the Mystical Forest Zone, so I know what I'm talking about)

More vandalism

Apparently, some journalist thinks this game will end all games and trigger Armageddon (probably misspelled) according to the vandal. I agree, but that doesn't belong here. ~ Doug teh H-Nut The preceding unsigned comment was added by 172.149.236.106 (talk • contribs) .

Just letting you know. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.34.99.44 (talk • contribs) .

More specifically, people from the Life, the Universe, and Everything board (LUE), as made obvious by their many LUEshis and obsession with corgis. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.139.226.226 (talk • contribs) .

I'm not surprised one bit by all of this brouhaha. They're still alive and causing trouble? I thought they'd all be locked up in juvenile hall/prison by now. Inexcusable little rapscallions, they are. Ron Stoppable 02:01, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

Hey, just for clarification, LUE is NOT vandalizing the pages. We never have had ANYTHING to do with Corgis. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.171.234.111 (talk • contribs) .

About the screenshots, is somebody going to put them back up? I, myself, don't know how to. -- Matt 09:20, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Cool. The screenshots are up and they look great. Can't wait for online racing. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Matt Heard (talk • contribs) .

Obsolete screenshots

The screenshots arrayed at the bottom of the article are from an early version of the game. Most notably, the character models are less detailed, and Cheep Cheep Beach has grass that is not present in the final version. Some of these differences can still be found in the Mario Kart DS Demo Version at DS kiosks in retail stores. --Poiuyt Man talk 07:58, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Game Modes

agreed, and done. --Darkain Dragoon 12:13, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

Game Speed

I think it might be worth mentioning somewhere that online WFC matches run at 100cc speeds, and time-attack mode runs at 150cc. This question has come up before on forums online. --Darkain Dragoon 23:51, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

Merging of two Modes sections

It seems a bit weird having two Modes sections. If I had my DS here I would merge them, but as it stands I would probably make a few big mistakes.

Also, from what I can see, time trial mode is missing from both sections. --Croperz 13:36, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

Time trials

I think this information should not be in the wikipedia article, isntead, i think it should be featured in the wikibooks instead. --Darkain Dragoon 09:38, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

It might just be me, but I think it's too short for a full wikibooks entry. Unless somebody altered the segment on time attacking. I could see this being posted on wikibooks if the staff ghosts times were recorded, but otherwhise I think it should stand. -- • An_User • 12:16, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Racers and Karts

Item stat

From what I've seen in my own racing, how long a kart remains affected after getting hit by a Lightning Bolt does not seem to vary by the kart's own Item stat, but more on its position within the race (as described in the 'Items' section of the article). It could vary by the attacker's Item stat though... (this may need verification). Stratadrake 05:58, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Shy Guy

I've heard some people say that they've hacked the game and made Shy Guy a playable character. I was told that his weight stat is the same as Yoshi's, but could somebody with a flash cart and passme check? -- • An_User • 12:16, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Far as I know Shy Guy is only available during download play.--Acebrock 18:07, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Tracks

Are there 32 or 40? The chance of there being 5 tracks per cup are unlikely, but if anyone can provide a credible source. None of the previous Mario Karts have had 5 tracks in a cup. The Mario Kart website states that there are 30 tracks, which is most likely the 32 which have been shown. Can somebody prove that 40 tracks is unsupported speculation, or that it is actually the truth? IMO, I hope there are 40 tracks, but I'm skeptical. 32 is still great. Plus Mirror Mode. -- Matt 10:02, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

There are definitely only 4 tracks in a cup (though the original Mario Kart did have 5 per cup, just for the record), and there are many reliable sites confirming this (GameSpot makes a comment about "the full 32 tracks" here when mentioning that they won't all be available online). So unless there are secret cups or something, which would have probably been discovered by now, then it's just 32 tracks. --Tumalu 06:52, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
Sorry. Forgot about the 5 in Mario Kart. It's been ages since I've played that. NES stored away somewhere in the attic. I should get it out sometime... -- Matt 20:57, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

Home Course On Nitro Cups

The home course for Mario and Princess Peach is Delfino Square, the home course for Luigi and Princess Daisy is Luigi's Mansion, the home course for Wario is Wario Stadium, the home course for Waluigi is Waluigi Pinball, the home course for Bowser and R.O.B. is Bowser Castle, the home course for Yoshi is Yoshi Falls. --ZachKudrna18@yahoo.com

Available courses online

Someone has said that all 32 courses are available for online play, but I can't find any such source. TYP at PlanetGameCube answered several times in the mailbag that only 20 courses are available, and listed exactly which ones. Does anyone have a link that says all 32 are available. Until then, I'm leaving the list of courses with the unavailable courses marked. -- VederJuda 13:39, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

there are only 20 courses online. (this coming from someone who is practically living on the game online) --Darkain Dragoon 02:45, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

A racer called parasyte hacked mario kart online so he could use the other tracks online.

Track tables

I reformatted the track listings from a standard bulleted list to tables (except for battle). If anyone has any problems with it or changes they want made to the tables, but do not know how, just post. Tables present information much more easily and they take up a lot less space vertically. I also created the WFC redirect. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.41.212.243 (talk • contribs) .

Trivia

Do we actually have any valid information that the Rainbow Road from this game is the beta from Mario Kart 64? I've heard the rumor too, but unless a source from Nintendo is cited, I think it should be removed. The same goes for the intended launch title release. It's all well and good to speculate, but you can't post things you don't know as facts. Also, should we trim it even further by removing the tidbits about unlockables and King Boo? At the very least, it deserves some reformatting (it seems to "break" from the article's writing style) -- • An_User • 12:16, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

In-Game Items

Ghost's Invisibility

I noticed that in this video of a normal race, when the user activated the ghost item at 0:20, he didn't turn transparent, as characters did in other Mario Kart games to indicate that they had turned invisible. Thus, I'm not sure whether using the Ghost item causes invisibility in racing mode.

This does, however, prove it's avalible in modes other than battle. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.114.203.249 (talk • contribs) .

I get a file not found error on that site, but then I tend to block cookies like the plague, and these sites don't like that; can anyone else see it? -- VederJuda 03:34, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

Item categories not fully correct.

The current category sorting of the items is not fully correct, since many of the items can be obtained outside of their category, depending on the Item rating of the player's kart. It also is not accurate when there are less than eight players in a race. It needs to be reworded a bit to note that the item categories are not set in stone. --Poiuyt Man talk 04:55, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

Well, we can just put a note saying that it is the karts with average item stats that it is for. I think they are in fact correct for all item stats; all high item stats do is increase your chance of getting Triple Shells, Bananas, and Mushrooms as opposed to their single counterparts, make items such as Bullet Bills and Stars last longer on you, increase the amount of time items such as Thunderbolts and Bloopers affect you for, and give you more Mushrooms for Time Trial. I think items can only be obtained outside the category if you steal them with a Boo, or get them in a different category to when you ran over the Item, as the Roulette is determined by the position you are in when you get the Item Box. For example, if you run over an Item Box in second, move up to first while the Roulette is going, and get a Mushroom (a 2nd-3rd item), it is because you were in second when you ran over the Item Box. If you are sure that it does affect the categories, give your evidence and we can maybe put up the note mentioned earlier.
The- 08:06, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

It's quite easy to observe that these categories aren't correct by simply starting up an 8-player versus round in Single Player, and pausing to record the results. Here are some results I recorded in Wario Stadium, 100cc Special Cup, playing as Daisy in the Standard DS Kart. To avoid complications, I only recorded those items where I did not change my place between getting the box and the roulette stopping.
  • While in 2nd Place, received Green Shell (should require 1st) twice
  • While in 4th Place, received Red Shell (2nd-3rd) once
  • While in 8th Place, received Triple Mushroom (4th-5th) three times, Golden Mushroom (6th-8th) once, Star (6th-8th) once, Thunderbolt (6th-8th) twice, and Bullet Bill (6th-8th) twice.
According to the article (and various FAQs), it should not have been possible for me to get 6 out of those 12 items. Try it out yourself.
Additionally, out of the three FAQs on GameFAQs that list required places for items (1, 2, and 3), all of them list different information. The article appears to use the third FAQ for the item information. Three conflicting sources, with no official word from Nintendo, is enough to deem the item information unverifiable. --Poiuyt Man talk 15:52, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
That information should go in a Wikibook, not in the main article. -- ReyBrujo 15:19, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

THe items are orginzed so when you are in first, you can only get the first group of items, when 2 or 3, you can get items from the first and the second group. Option pack?

An anonymous user in this edit said that when MKSC was in Slot 2, it could not be played. I've removed it because I've been able to play MKSC when MKDS was in Slot 1. Hbdragon88 05:48, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

The first time I turned on my DS with MKDS in it, it detected, MK:SC as an option card. I don't think you can play it while it picks it up as an option card. It hasn't done that since then though so I don't know if it was a glitch or something. I don't think it did anything to either game but I'm not sure. Some guy 05:50, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
It's a "glitch" in the DS itself, happens when a GBA game isn't detected properly(Usually caused by dust or the game not being inserted fully) Happens from time to time, especially if you swap games often. Smoke 21:24, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

Quick Question

Just curious: why does the information regarding the race start boost (accelerating just as the 2 fades) get removed? Is it because it is a cheat/hint rather than valuable information? --Teabagged 04:39, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Online Scoring

I see someone took out the part about losses being subtracted from a player's record, it doesn't happen. But are these worth mentioning?

  • A player can disconnect before the first race (i.e. during the kart- or track- selection screen) without taking a losses penalty.[4]
  • If the fourth race of a multiplayer set cannot be completed because all other players have disconnected, the remaining player does not receive any wins (though the others still receive losses for disconnecting).[5]

...Also, there are rumors[6] floating around on Nintendo's forums of a glitch that allows losses to be subtracted from a player's record under certain conditions. Stratadrake 04:39, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

You guys didn't even mention PRB

PRB = Prolonged Rocket Boost, its starting to become common

(Sort of like Snaking, but timed perfectly with the starting boost so that when you go offroad you lose no speed) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.54.187.181 (talkcontribs) .

Do we need this?

Someone added this to the article -- I'm unsure if it's actually noteworthy, so I'll post it here in the meantime.

====Leading On====
Another tactic is the use of "leading on." It is done when a player goes
in the path of a dropped item, like a banana or a shell when there is an
opponent behind the player. Once the player reaches within mere feet of
the item, he or she will move out of the way. If done correctly, the
opponent will smash into that item.

My thoughts:

  • Not specific to MKDS, or even the Mario Kart series -- can be done in just about any racing game featuring items and/or obstacles.
  • Not actually a feature (unlike drafting).
  • Unsure if this is even a common tactic in the first place (unlike snaking).
