Although a key ring is essentially a very simple device, expanation of such is always difficult. A picture counts a lot. Indeed a picture of the alternate forms where a clasp is hinged to the ring and can be lifted similarly to a bridge to allow a key to be added is probably best described with a picture unless someone is really good with words. About Key Rings -- references US patent numbers #1327534, #1333655, #1338085, all in 1920.
WikiAnswers -- someone says "G Herluf Johnson" did it, but that "the ring part" was done by a juggler in Russia from the 1830's..? More on the juggler, from another source, after the tall tale, but this is hardly an authoritative source.
