Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! Hope you like it here, and stick around.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Good luck!

Meelar (talk)

P.S. One last helpful hint. To sign your posts like I did above (on talk pages, for example) use the '~' symbol. To insert just your name, type ~~~ (3 tildes), or, to insert your name and timestamp, use ~~~~ (4 tildes).

Why are you creating these weird redirects? RickK 05:23, Oct 24, 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Thanks so much for helping out with New York. There is a lot of work to do here. However, I question the number of stub articles that you seem to be producing. If you can't produce a few decent paragraphs, it may be better to incorporate the information into another article. I have been doing this for some of the hamlets because there is not a lot of information about them, so I put what there is inside the town article. I would like to point out to you that Wikipedia is already inundated with stubs, so try to resist making one or two sentence articles and creating problems. Of course, if you intend to come back to some of the stubs and fill them out later, go ahead. Thanks Stepp-Wulf 06:08, 20 Dec 2004 (UTC).

If you were writing about some major areas, I would agree, but most of these places are nothing much, and it is unlikely that anyone but a specialist in the area would be able to add much more. I also agree about not creating red streaks throughout an article due to wikifying any potential sub-article. I recently exchanged some harsh words with someone who did that to a few of my articles. My main focus has been to get New York fixed down to the town level, putting other locations in the towns. That way someone else can come along, create a new article, and do some real writing if he knows the topic. It turns out that the only lengthy articles about hamlets were those created due to census tracts. All the others are one or two sentences at best and have remained that way since they were created, probably because the author got bored with it and never came back. Thus, the proliferation of stubs. Stepp-Wulf 05:03, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC).

Devil's Lake

[edit]

There is an article naming dispute over Devil's Lake. I am of the opinion that Devil's Lake should redirect to Devil's Lake (North Dakota), while another editor, DreamGuy, prefers to have Devil's Lake point to a disambiguation page. Since you have edited the article, I would appreciate your comments on this matter at Talk:Devil's Lake (North Dakota). Thank you. --Alexwcovington (talk) 05:34, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Edmeston

[edit]

Hello. Are you responsible for all of the material that has been posted here about Edmeston? If so, i think it is fascinating, but I am not sure that this is the right place for it. On the other hand, it would be a great addition to Wikisource (www.wikisource.org) or Wikibooks (www.wikibooks.org). Would you consider moving it there? Please let me know. Danny 00:37, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I think Wikisource would be most appropriate. I deleted them for now, after a huge debate, but would be happy to restore them if that would make it easier for you to recreate them there. Please let me know. You may also consider Wikicities. Danny 01:47, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Danny, that's disingenuous. You deleted them while the debate was still ongoing, and I had already restored them by the time you posted this. +sj +
Yes, please restore them and give me a couple days to copy them out. I'll let you know when I'm done.Nonenmac 01:59, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

There was a big debate about this on irc...

[edit]

The articles will probably all be on VfD by the time you read this. I think it was a neat effort you made, and we should discuss ways to allow local detail in Wikipedia. +sj + 01:24, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Please note that there is no clear consensus about whether or not this content belongs on WP. I think that the real question is how much of this content should stay, and how many pages it should occupy -- one per year? one per decade? one per century? one for the history, with all kinds of random details and images, and one for the current status of the town? (you could certainly defend the latter position; you might even work an excellent, long history article up to featured article standards). So please make sure to contribute to the VfD debate, without feeling defensive. +sj + 02:30, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Iroquois maps

[edit]

Did you create these maps that were added to the Iroquois article? The image description page is not clear. If you didn't create them could you list a source? Rmhermen 23:41, May 2, 2005 (UTC)

Yes I created them. I think I made that clear, at least on one of them. I'll make sure it's clear on both of them. - Nonenmac 13:43, 3 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ada Township, South Dakota

[edit]

You added a lot of statistics to Ada Township, South Dakota. What is the source? When were the statistics compiled (so we know when they are out of date)? I ran into the article while looking through articles tagged cleanup. RJFJR 14:25, May 8, 2005 (UTC)

categories for images

[edit]

I notice you have added categories to some images-- something I've done a lot of. I wonder if you have noticed the move to delete images that have been moved to Commons. Note that, when this happens, the categories don't move too-- in fact, the categorization in Commons is completely different (and generally less developed) than cats in en. I don't know if there's much that can be done at this point, but it looks to me as if adding cats to images is basically a losing proposition. -- Mwanner 01:33, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)

lots of edits, not an admin

[edit]

Hi - I made a list of users who've been around long enough to have made lots of edits but aren't admins. If you're at all interested in becoming an admin, can you please add an '*' immediately before your name in this list? I've suggested folks nominating someone might want to puruse this list, although there is certainly no guarantee anyone will ever look at it. Thanks. -- Rick Block (talk) 17:48, Jun 21, 2005 (UTC)

Sir William Vs. Guy Johnson painting

[edit]

Hello, thanks for dropping a line! My source is Fintan O Toole's excellant new bio of William "White Savage: William Johnson and the Invention of America". Note 2 to Chapter 24 (page 374) reads "See Helmut von Erffa and Allen Staley, "The Paintings of Benjamin West", Yale University Press, 1986, pp. 57-8, 210-12, 523-4. The third of these paintings is in the National Gallery in Washington, where it is identified, wrongly, as a portrait of Guy Johnson. Everything - the strong visual links to the other paintsings of William Johnson, the visula reference to Niagara, and the fact that the painting bears no resembleance whatsoever to descriptions of Guy - points to it as a portrait of William Johnson."

Actually, I do think it bears a strong resmblence to the one painting (really a colour sketch) I have seen of Guy, but also of Sir William as he was as a younger man. Glad to have stirred up a debate on this! Fergananim 14 August 2005

Greetings, editor! Your name appears on Wikipedia:List of non-admins with high edit counts. If you have not done so lately, please take a look at that page and check your listing to be sure that following the particulars are correct:

  1. If you are an admin, please remove your name from the list.
  2. If you are currently interested in being considered for adminship, please be sure your name is in bold; if you are opposed to being considered for adminship, please cross out your name (but do not delete it, as it will automatically be re-added in the next page update).

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Venezuela 1972 Werner Projectiion Stamp.gif. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL-self to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Notability of James Cooper

[edit]

The article James Cooper (b.1729) seems to lack any claim of notability (unless you count having a notable son and grandson). Before I go so far as to suggest deletion, I thought I'd mention it to you as its creator in case there is some notability that can be added to make it fit WP:BIO a bit better. Unspecified source for Image:Akwesasne Territory.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Akwesasne Territory.gif. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Untagged image

[edit]

An image you uploaded, Image:Albany City Seal a.jpg, was tagged with the coatofarms copyright tag. This tag was deleted because it does not actually specify the copyright status of the image. The image may need a more accurate copyright tag, or it may need to be deleted. If the image portrays a seal or emblem, it should be tagged as seal. If you have any questions, ask them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. -- 16:43, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Please do not upload still images in the GIF format

[edit]

Hello and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that you've uploaded a number of still images in the GIF format. In the future, please save GIF images in the PNG format before uploading (see Wikipedia:Preparing images for upload). PNG images almost always have a smaller file size, which decreases the amount of time they take to load. There are a bunch of other advantages to the PNG format such as lossless compression that you can read about on its Wikipedia article. —Remember the dot (t) 22:35, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please help us figuring out the copyright situation ats:Wikisource:Scriptorium:Untagged images linked from History of Edmeston, New York?--BirgitteSB 14:22, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

I have added a "prod" template to the article John Breadbake, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Orphaned fair use image (Image:Drums along the Mohawk poster.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Drums along the Mohawk poster.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 20:45, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question, do you have proof if the Edmeston Museum released the images into the public domain? If not, then the template would have to be deleted. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 01:31, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This template can be deleted. Only 2 images that use it remain, and neither of them are still in use in Wikipedia. Those 2 images can also be deleted. All other images that used this template have since been moved to other wikis. — Nonenmac 17:26, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New York towns, etc.

[edit]

Hi Nonenmac, I didn't have any plans on changing more only because I was ignorant about their existence. I would be happy to change them all and I moved all of the ones I found. Can you direct me to a repository of all of them? -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 17:29, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You can go to Category:Towns in New York and Category:Villages in New York to find all of the New York town and village articles. You can also look at List of towns in New York and List of villages in New YorkNonenmac 18:52, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
To be consistent, you might also want to look at Category:Cities in New York, List of cities in New York, Category:Census-designated places in New York and List of census-designated places in New York for similar ambiguous place names. All use the previous convention (e.g. Batavia (city), New York and Altona (CDP), New York). — Nonenmac 02:09, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Arthur_Caswell_Parker.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 14:42, 22 April 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Kelly hi! 14:42, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Peace Bridge logo.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Peace Bridge logo.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Project FMF (talk) 23:27, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pascal's triangle

Hi Nonenmac.

I like your efforts at Pascal's triangle, but may I point out that 2002 is even...? (It's incorrectly shaded in the figure with the caption "Pascal's triangle with odd numbers shaded".)--Noe (talk) 20:02, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tiling images

Hi!

I saw your tiling SVG image replacements. If you want to also change the tiling article images they are in a template database "-image" tag here. I already replaced the 3 regulars you did first.

Tom's grumpy SVG reverts

[edit]

I was grumpy, reverted a bunch on SVG changes from you, prism database, and Coxeter-Dinkins diagrams. Sorry, not nice of me. The polyhedron tables should use -image database key, and I'd like that image should stay solid PNG for consistency. The image2, image3 entries aren't really used now, but could be, for transparent versions like yours. I don't know about value of transparency, but always hard for any single image to show everything. I defend the PNGs as high resolution images from Stella (software) and there's plenty more images I plan to add, so I want to stay there for consistency.

I agree that showing transparency in the polyhedra isn't always beneficial -- it's often more confusing -- but what I don't think is appropriate in the Stella images are the cool-looking metal bars and knobs on the edges and vertices. They're nice to look at, but I don't think they add much in most cases. If the software can produce the images without the decoration, that would be much better. Going for a common look is good, be we should stay away from a look that marks images as being generated by a particular piece of software. And we don't want to teach kids that dodecahedrons have little balls on the corners. -- Nonenmac (talk) 14:09, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The bars and balls are optional features in Stella. I added them originally for the star polyhedrons, since it made it more clear were the "real" edges and vertices exist while intersecting faces don't create new edges. For convex forms they are more just pretty, but I think can be defendable. Edges and vertices are "real elements" that are represented symbolically. Tom Ruen (talk) 21:22, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On the CD diagrams, I just can't like the SVG symbols, the antialiasing on looks ugly to me. I can't defend this choice besides personal preference, but the symbols are still incomplete, and I add more as PNG as I find the need. Tom Ruen (talk) 22:40, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of American Meteor Society

[edit]

The article American Meteor Society has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

lacks 3rd party references demonstrating notability of this organization.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing dated prod will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. RadioFan (talk) 13:10, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Polyomino images

[edit]

Just in case you haven't been watching your talk page on the Commons, someone found errors in your Heptomino and Octomino images. I've identified how the heptomino image should be corrected, see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics for details. I would make the correction myself, but the file uses some sophisticated SVG features that the editor I'm using, Inkscape, doesn't handle very well.--RDBury (talk) 02:58, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I made the changes that were indicated in the octomino diagram. You may want to check to make sure that I didn't introduce any new problems. I moved the disputed-diagram template in the image's talk page. You can move it back if there's a problem. -- Nonenmac (talk) 23:18, 22 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for taking the trouble! However, there still seem to be two problems:
  • 7th row/14th column: still a heptomino, but 7th row/16th column is a nonomino now
  • 17th row/9th column: should probably be blue (C2 symmetry)
Cheers --ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 15:52, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Mathworld has an octomino image to compare to but it can't be used directly as it's under copyright (not to mention Mathworld occasionally has errors). It could be used for verification purposes though.--RDBury (talk) 21:28, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The 369 "free" octominoes (latest modifications)
The Image still has an error in it; row 16, column 2 is the same as row 18, last column. I'm deleting the image from the article for now. Still trying to work out which one is missing.--RDBury (talk) 15:21, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, the missing octomino is
     X
     X
--RDBury (talk) 20:23, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I changed the last figure in row 18 to the one you show here. Thanks. -- Nonenmac (talk) 13:45, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Two more issues:

  • The last-but-one octomino should be purple, not green, to match the colour coding of the heptominoes (2 reflection symmetries along the diagonals).
  • What about the C4 octomino (also in the last row)? Wouldn't be blue more appropriate, or a different colour altogether?

Cheers, ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 15:44, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the next-to-last octomino from green to purple as you suggested, and I made the C4 octomino yellow to show its uniqueness. The square one with a hole in the middle at row-9, col-6 is also C4, but it does fit into the purple category, though maybe yellow would be better for it too. -- Nonenmac (talk) 13:45, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The bagel has D4 symmetry. I think purple is fine because it combines the symmetries of the other purple octominoes (reflection symmetry along the gridlines plus reflection symmetry along the diagonals). Unless you want to split this subset into three, but then the heptomino files (File:Heptominoes.svg, File:Rotation and Reflection Symmetrical Heptominoes.svg) would have to be changed as well: The last one in File:Rotation and Reflection Symmetrical Heptominoes.svg also has two diagonal reflection symmetries. But this probably would be overdoing it a bit. --ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 11:49, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I added sketches of the symmetric nonominoes to that page, but I'm not good enough with Inkscape to create proper SVGs. If ever you don't know how to pass your time ... wink wink ...

Anyway, thanks for all the work you put into File:All 369 free octominoes.svg! --ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 11:50, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I put together some SVG files to replace your text diagrams. If you see any problems with them or have any suggestions for improvement, let me know. --Nonenmac (talk) 13:29, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good. I found two small errors: one of the 90° mirror symmetric forms has a hole; and the same form should be red in the "nonominoes with holes"-diagram. Already fixed.
How would you like having different colours for all eight symmetry groups, i. e. splitting the purple forms into two colours (or three for the octominoes)? --ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 17:59, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think it would be good to have another color. I'll make the changes, tentatively using the following color scheme:
Reflect @90 EEAAAA (Red)
Reflect @45 AAEEAA (Green)
Rotate C2 AAAAEE (Blue)
Rotate C4 FFCC66 (Yellow)
Rot/Reflect D2@90 CC88CC (Purple)
Rot/Reflect D2@45 FFAA77 (Orange)
Rot/Reflect D4 88CCCC (Blu-Grn)
Others AAAAAA (Gray)
--Nonenmac (talk)
Since reflect@90 and reflect@45 have diffferent colours, so should D2@90 and D2@45 (the latter relevant only for 7- and 8-ominoes). Orange is unused, for example. --ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 09:07, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Good plan. D2@45 will be orange. --Nonenmac (talk) 12:49, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on The Rivileers requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hang on to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. • This permission does not give you any special status or authority
  • Submission of inappropriate material may lead to its removal
  • You may wish to display the Autopatrolled top icon and/or the userbox on your user page
  • If, for any reason, you decide you do not want the permission, let me know and I can remove it

Non-free rationale for File:Noah John Rondeau.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Noah John Rondeau.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Triclisperma paucifolia

[edit]

I've reverted your edit to Polygala paucifolia listing Triclisperma paucifolia as a synonym, which is backwards from what the Plant List says, but then wondered if you were in the process of moving the page to Polygaloides. I think that we have to wait for the Flora of North America treatment to appear, since it is not clear from this paper which species will be in which of the new genera. Nadiatalent (talk) 23:43, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I had not planned on renaming the article, but I did realize that Triclisperma paucifolia was the accepted name according to The Plant List and had considered putting a note next to it stating so, but, but I've seen a lot of species in Wikipedia that are not listed by the accepted name in the Plant List. The way I look at it is that both names are synonyms for each other, so both names should be in the article, regardless of which is the accepted one. Nonenmac (talk) 00:24, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In botany only the included taxon is a synonym, not the one that includes it (zoology might do something different from that, I can't be quite sure because I find their code of nomenclature very confusing). A lot of pages in wikipedia need updating ... Nadiatalent (talk) 01:09, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Nonenmac, I just re-translated the common name on Vitis bryoniifolia to "North China grape", as Huabei means "China's North" (at least according to the WP article for North China). I created redirs for the name and its most obvious variants to point to the species. When I checked "what links here", I noticed your page at User:Nonenmac/Vitis, and out of curiosity took a look. You may wish to change Huabei grape to North China grape for the common name of V. byroniifolia, but that is up to you. Regards, Hamamelis (talk) 02:34, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Could you give me a hand with my query at the talk page there? I'd be happy to add more species. Choess (talk) 07:31, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fern cladogram

[edit]

Hi, you made an edit to Fern with the summary "formatted the phylogram a bit". However, you didn't just format the cladogram, you changed it, e.g. removing the label "core leptosporangiates" and also the spermatophyte node. Was there a reason for this? If it was an error as part of formatting, could you please put these back. Peter coxhead (talk) 09:56, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I should have listed the substantive changes separately. I did make those changes intetionally. The position of "spermatophyes" was misleading, though I don't think incorrect. The "core leptospornaginates" label was removed for consistency: similar groups were not labeled and I think putting them if would have been inappropriate for a diagram at this level. That label also caused formatting problems because it contained a break. That doesn't work in the clade template because it pushes the line down, sometime even below the clade that follows it.Nonenmac (talk) 14:20, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, actually I see that I misunderstood; you didn't remove "spermatophytes", just swapped the order, which is fine. Yes, labels should never have line breaks; it would be ok as core leptosporangiates, but I agree it's not needed. I just wasn't sure if you'd changed these things deliberately; the clade template is tricky to use! Peter coxhead (talk) 15:08, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Nice to see someone using barlabel effectively as you have at Fern. (It took me a ridiculous amount of time to develop this template, so I like to see some return on investment!) Peter coxhead (talk) 10:27, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Some tips for biological articles

[edit]

I've been going through your edits and I'm seeing a few minor mistakes. I thought it best to inform you as you are editing a lot of fern articles and I can't quite keep up with correcting them:

  • Also please do not put references in the taxobox itself as you did here. They are unnecessary and clutters it. The taxonomic placement of the taxon should be discussed in the article itself, then sourced.

Thanks. :) -- OBSIDIANSOUL 23:12, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Polypodiales

[edit]

I notice that you have been updating the taxoboxes on a number of fern articles. While that is a good thing, there are a couple of issues to raise. Firstly, subfamilies should not be in italics (regardless of how they appear in Christenhusz et al., 2011), and secondly, references should not really be placed in the taxobox. If a fact needs citing, it should be cited in the main body of the text. You may also like to copy the way I formatted that reference at Cryptogramma crispa – your attempt used non-standard formatting, and included a couple of spelling mistakes. --Stemonitis (talk) 08:02, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What Stemonitis said last. I appreciate your work in doing this massive update to the phylogeny, but please don't keep propagating these typos around. You can cut & paste the version from my recent edits, if you like. Choess (talk) 03:18, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ach, what a mess. There's still a typo or two in the version you're now using (no en-dash, Schneider's first name mis-spelled), and I see Stemonitis reverted one of my changes. I'll ping him to send him over here, but here's what seems to be the current best version to use:

I left out the "format" parameter because the documentation for the citation templates says: "format: Format of the work referred to by url, e.g. PDF; HTML is implied and should not be specified". Let's see if the three of us agree this is the best way to format the reference, and then we can all cut-and-paste it from the above code. I'm sorry to spoil a nice run of taxonomic reorganization, but since this reference is going to be on almost all encyclopedia pages about ferns, we ought to try to get it right. Choess (talk) 15:44, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
"Format implied by URL" is a terrible way of determining the format. A URL ending in ".pdf" needn't be a PDF file, and one which doesn't end ".pdf" could still be (both of these occur fairly frequently); the only way to be sure what format it is going to be is for a person who has seen it to tell you. For that reason, I always mark PDF files as such (with a wikilink), and following that practice will cause exactly zero harm. Separating authors' christian names and surnames is also not desirable if that contradicts the existing style used in an article (which was the case for C. crispa) – and makes no sense anyway for non-alphabetised listings – and there are also issues with name orders for Oriental names, which are hard to control using first and last without applying semantically incorrect tags. Certainly, your [Choess's] format is better than the one Nonenmac had been using, but there is no justification for replacing mine with it. It may be closer to Wikipedia's de facto standard, but common sense argues against it. I would suggest you use the format below: --Stemonitis (talk) 16:59, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I'll use that from now on until I hear otherwise. Thanks for all the input. -- Nonenmac (talk) 21:54, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree slightly on some of these points, but I yield to your opinion, Stemonitis. Nonenmac, thanks for taking this pleasantly, and I again thank you for your work. I always find it uncomfortable when my first acknowledgment of a person's good work is implied by the nitpicking of a small part of it. Choess (talk) 04:20, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Decomino

[edit]

Would you be interested in creating some figures for new article Decomino as you did so nicely for Nonomino and others. Since it is no longer practical to include all decominoes, perhaps the new figures should just show a sampling. Perhaps figures are not needed at this stage or a very small sample would suffice. Any ideas? Thanks for all your fine contributions.--Foobarnix (talk) 09:22, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Big Flats, New York (disambiguation)

[edit]

The article Big Flats, New York (disambiguation) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unnecessary disambiguation per WP:TWODABS

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Tavix (talk) 18:11, 11 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Edmeston AB requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company, corporation or organization, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

Changed behaviour of Template:Tx

[edit]

Hi, I see you haven't been around lately, but I thought I should flag up a change I've made to the behaviour of Tx, which you created and has, I think, mostly been used by you. To ensure that it handles hybrid names and botanical infraspecific names correctly (e.g. doesn't italicize connecting forms like "subsp."), I've altered it to use Taxon italics for the italicization.

A side-effect is that it doesn't work if the taxon name is already wikilinked; Txil has to be used instead:

  • Lonchitis → Lonchitis L. – correct
  • Lonchitis → Lonchitis L. – now wrong
  • Lonchitis → Lonchitis L. – correct

There were only 8 articles I could find using Tx with a wikilinked taxon name; I've fixed them all. Peter coxhead (talk) 11:21, 23 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Commons image

[edit]

Hi, I noticed you uploaded the range maps for Pinus pseudostrobus on Commons. The original range you uploaded shows El Salvador, but the digitized version does not. Could you correct this? I'm working on the Pinus pseudostrobus article on Wikipedia, and it is misleading as my refrences say it is found in El Salvador but the map doesn't reflect this. Also, the link is dead, so I cannot evaluate whether this is reliable content. Could you correct the digitized map and redo the link? Thanks! Abies balsamica (talk) 23:45, 5 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The digitized range maps from the USGS website appear to be no longer available. Apparently the USGS map was based on the 1966 Critchfield & Little map shown in File:CL-52 Pinus pseudostrobus & Pinus gordoniana range map.png, which does show the tree just barely being present in El Salvador. But the USGS map seemed to use a very rough tracing of the original map's "Approximate limits". Because there appears to be only a single collection locality on (or just south of) the northern border of El Salvador, the approximate limit appears to only enter El Salvador at the northern corner. So the rough tracing of the approximate limits didn't quite make it into El Salvador. Maybe that's why the USGS took the maps down (imperfectly digitized old data). I suppose I could retrace the original map boundaries and approximate limits to make a new map, but it would be no more accurate than the original, which is 55 years old. -- Nonenmac (talk) 02:08, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thomé illustrations

[edit]

Hi Nonenmac. I'm working on founder crops and wanted to illustrate the article with images from commons:Category:Thomé, Flora von Deutschland (I like consistency and it was the only PD flora I could find that had most—frustratingly all not—of the eight founder crops). I noticed that some years ago you modified some of these to have a white background and consistent aspect ratio, which looks great. Two of the images I need have been modified already – do you think you could find the time to do the others? Would be a great help. Thanks, – Joe (talk) 10:50, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Joe. I can do that. I noticed that for consistency with the cereal grains, it might be better to go with commons:Category:Icones et descriptiones Graminum austriacorum as a source since all 3 are included.
What do you think? Nonenmac (talk) 13:22, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wonderful, thank you. And yes good idea with the cereals – it's also nicer that they show the whole plant. – Joe (talk) 15:21, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I did File:Triticum monococcum illustration (01f).png as a start. Is that pretty much what you want? If not, I don't mind making any changes that you think are appropriate. Nonenmac (talk) 22:49, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's perfect, thanks. – Joe (talk) 08:07, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much for doing this! I think it looks great now. – Joe (talk) 14:28, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
