Netoholic has proposed that we move articles on still-active companies that have been bought out by other companies and become subsidiaries over into Category:Subsidiary companies. I think this is a pretty good solution, as it avoids the inconguency of some fairly dynamic ongoing business units being categorized as "defunct." However, it's a fair piece of work, since there are a number of articles in this condition to be moved, so I wanted to ensure there was a consensus on it before we got started. --Gary D 18:53, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Actually, I am now of the mind that the distinction is remarkably non-relevant. It seems to be categorization for its own sake. Who really is going to click on that Category:Subsidiary companies link at the bottom, and what useful information does it serve? ~~We need something better, or nothing at all.~~ How about Category:Corporate subsidiaries by company? -- Netoholic @ 07:12, 4 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Speaking strictly for Wackenhut, a company that employs over 40,000 people and is number two in its market segment is hardly "defunct." Therefore removed. --clarka 3 Sept 2004

I notice that some people are adding this category to things that were never companies; merely brand names or divisions. For example, Imperial (automobile), that was merely a fairly short lived division of Chrysler. I think that's misusing the category. —Morven 00:12, Oct 26, 2004 (UTC)

Subsidiaries?

The preamble for this category says that companies which continue trading under the same name after a takeover should be put in Category:Subsidiary companies, however that does not exist. Where does WMC Resources belong at the moment? It's been taken over by BHP Billiton. --ScottDavis 2 July 2005 12:09 (UTC)
