1843 – William Cornelius Van Horne (pictured), who oversaw the major construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway and who became the youngest superintendent of the Illinois Central Railroad, is born (d. 1915).
1881 – The Seney Syndicate meets at Seney's New York bank and organizes the New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railway Company (which would later become the Nickel Plate Road).
1995 – Canadian National Railway sells the former Central Vermont Railway lines in New York and Vermont to RailTex, forming the basis for the New England Central Railroad.
2004 – The first freight train travels the entire north-south transcontinental railroad in Australia between Adelaide, South Australia, and Darwin, Northern Territory.
