Change (Movement) of Article Title
[edit]After first proposing this change (movement) in late May, I changed the title of this article from "New Orleans Blues" to "New Orleans Rhythm and Blues," because frankly I've never heard this genre referred to as "New Orleans Blues" but always as "New Orleans Rhythm and Blues." For example, see the book titles by Broven and Hannusch in the "Sources" section that I added.
In general, however, this stub is substandard in qualilty, given the importance of the topic to American popular culture -- it needs improvement badly.

Removal of Cajun Reference
[edit]I cut "as well as distinctively Cajun influences (see zydeco)". Where does this analysis come from? Examples? -- Infrogmation
Suggestion for Changing (Moving) Article Title
[edit]I converted this entry to a stub because it needs much additional information, given the importance of this genre to American music. Also, I suggest changing the entry's title to "New Orleans Rhythm and Blues," which is the most common term for this genre; I've never heard anyone refer to it simply as "New Orleans Blues," which to seems unintentionally misleading.--Skb8721 15:06, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
Merger proposal

The result of the move request for the Proposal to Merge New Orleans blues into this talk page's article was:
A proposal to merge the New Orleans blues article here has been made. Comments below. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 20:32, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you GenQuest for doing the grunt work on this. I support the merge because I cannot find any evidence that these are separate topics. "New Orleans blues" seems to simply be a truncated form of "New Orleans rhythm and blues". Someone who knows music might know if this is correct, or if there actually is a difference. To confuse matters I will say that a google search for "New Orleans rhythm and blues" produces about 450,000 results, whereas "New Orleans blues" produces 3,460,000... so perhaps the shorter phrase is the more appropriate? Blue Danube (talk) 07:27, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose - The distinction between the related genres of blues and rhythm and blues is well established. The issue here is that the New Orleans rhythm and blues is not a very good article. That is not a reason for a merge, but for improvement.--SabreBD (talk) 08:22, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- Certainly blues and rhythm and blues are different. However I'm unable to find a reference explaining the difference between "New Orleans rhythm and blues" and "New Orleans blues". As far as I can understand, one may not even exist: can you determine that "New Orleans blues" is not just an improper truncation of "New Orleans rhythm and blues"; or conversely, that "New Orleans rhythm and blues" is an incorrectly expanded name for what is actually simply "New Orleans blues"? - Oppose. Two distinct things. There is some overlap, but also substantial non-overlapping. New Orleans style blues existed for generations before R&B, and not all R&B is Blues. -- Infrogmation (talk) 22:52, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
- Looking over the New Orleans blues article, I see the reason for the confusion, as the article seems to restrict to post-WWII blues, rather than New Orleans blues in general. I'd say that is more a point that our current New Orleans blues article is rather poor rather than a reason to try to merge topics. -- Infrogmation (talk) 22:56, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
