[edit]I've stuck a warning on the top of the page. This article is very biased.

I wrote the original article, and wouldn't say it was biased then? Not so sure what makes it biased now, although I have never heard of Shinwell's racist activities. Did ask the guy that wrote that bit for his source, but they have never provided it.
Would it read better without that paragraph? Big Jim Fae Scotland
My problem with the article is the the paragraph about racist activities. All I can find on a riot in 1919 from reputable source is:
"After the war Shinwell was involved in the struggle for a 40 hour week. The police broke up an open air trade union meeting at George Square on 31st January, 1919. The leaders of the union were then arrested and charged with "instigating and inciting large crowds of persons to form part of a riotous mob". Shinwell was sentenced to five months and Emanuel Shinwell got three months. The other ten were found not guilty." (from Spartacus)
That's it. Please delete the racist paragraph
Could you also add that in 1935 Shinwell defeated MacDonald in his own constituancy(Seaham)?
I suspect I bit off more than I could chew by trying to make big additions to an article as a newbie. All the information that I've added is verifiable, culled from Coates & Topham's 'Making of the Labour Movement', Peter Slowe's 'Manny Shinwell', Shinwell's own 'Conflict Without Malice' and others. Relevance may be an issue, although I intend to add articles on merchant seamen's trade unionism which will place Shinwell's early career in a fuller context.
I'm going to go back to the 'How to...' stuff and come back to this to clean it up a little. Feedback would be much appreciated. It's even harder than it looks, this wikipedia stuff, isn't it?
Incidentally, deletion of the racist allegation was definitely the right call. I note that the same allegation is made at Red Clydeside.
Is there a page on the above? Jackiespeel 16:08, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
