"Samhain is mentioned in some of the earliest Irish literature." in the Gaelic Folklore Influence section is vague and lacks citation

[edit]

What is the literature in question, and how early is early? These should probably be answered in the article. Meepcode (talk) 19:19, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. EvergreenFir (talk) 18:06, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Halloween is NOT Christian

[edit]

This has NOT originated in Christianity, it is actually a holiday practiced by witches… nothing Christian about this!! https://www.history.com/topics/halloween/history-of-halloween#ancient-origins-of-halloween 108.58.47.194 (talk) 14:41, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Scottish influence

[edit]

Some editors keep the order of influence that is against the evidence of influence: namely that, as the article states and is historically attested, the name of the festival is from the Scots word. This festival is not Samhain. Viking870 (talk) 22:41, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In the English language the name Halloween may well be derived from Scottish sources; the festival itself is not of exclusive Scottish origin, rather an older Celtic origin. The name of the "festival" in Irish Gaelic is indeed Samhain - in modern Irish it is called Oíche Shamhna. The article discusses the origins of the actual festival itself, not just the root of the modern English-language name? Sarah777 (talk) 00:08, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
