- 1872 – Shimbashi Station opens and becomes the first railway terminal in Tokyo, Japan.
- 1853 – John William Kendrick (pictured), chief engineer 1888-1893, general manager 1893-1899 and vice president 1899-1911 of Northern Pacific Railway and vice-chairman of the board for Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, is born (d. 1924).
- 1980 – U.S. President Jimmy Carter signs the Staggers Rail Act into law, significantly deregulating the American railroad industry.
- 2004 – The Canadian Transportation Safety Board issues its final report on the CN accident of May 2, 2002; the report blames the truck driver's fatigue as the cause of the accident and admonishes fire crews for less-than-optimal training in hazardous materials.
