- Recognized as the oldest cathedral in continuous use in the United States by the Vatican, Roman Curia and the United States Department of Interior which designated Our Lady of Peace as a National Historic Landmark for that reason
- Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, though built before Our Lady of Peace, was not a full cathedral but rather a co-cathedral for most of its history
- O.K. - I will re-edit.
- I added the titular sees of the Vicars Apostolic (July 28, 2004)
- Edict of Toleration - needs to be corrected. The Picpus Fathers, consisting of Fathers Alexis Bachelot (Prefect Apostolic), Abraham Armand, Patrick Short, and Brothers Theodore Boissier, Melchior Bondu and Leonore Portal sailed from Bordeaux in November 1826 on La Comète. They arrived in Honolulu on July 7, 1827. Also, foreign Catholics as a matter of policy were NOT persecuted.
- Co-Cathedral of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus - I earlier corrected an incorrect reference to Saint Theresa of Avila as titular of the church. Also, I deleted a reference to the bishop's second "throne" in deference to the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council's Decree on Bishops (Christus Dominus).
- Hi - this is Aloy. Thank you for your article, Gerald. It is quite good and I hope you don't mind if I augmented the work you have already done. All the above, except for the first three discussion points are mine. I didn't know how to log on and finally did.
- Oh I don't mind at all! :) It's so great to find someone so knowledgeable of Hawaii Catholic Church history! And no, please don't call it my article. It's just as much yours now since you've beefed it up. --Gerald Farinas 00:04, 30 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- Paix or "peace" in French is feminine and takes the definite article la
Oldest Cathedral
[edit]When saying "oldest cathedral in continuous use," does this mean it literally is oldest CATHEDRAL in continuous use in the United States? So it does not include other Roman Catholic Churches?
- Roman Catholic cathedral. Yep. --Gerald Farinas (talk) 05:01, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Future Renovations
[edit]It would be really nice if we could see pictures of the cathedral from the past. In any case, could we have an update of the current floor plans of the Cathedral, if any? I have heard in passing, the scrim that basically hides the high altar (and crucifix), will be taken down. The stairs to the choir loft would also be expanded to comply with fire safety codes, and the seating arrangement will revert back to the traditional style. I have always been a fan of tradition. Would anyone know when that will happen? Were these changes made to accommodate for the Latin Mass? Considering this is the mother parish of the Honolulu Diocese, it should set example. To have Bishop celebrate the Tridentine Mass on the true high would be a sight to behold. I hope this happens soon. I do look forward to these changes.
By the way, we should discourage ourselves from using the term "Roman Catholic". I do understand that it does distinguish us from different rites. However, it is not encouraged. Instead, we should use the simple and OFFICIAL term of, "Catholic". The term "Roman Catholic" does not even appear in the title of the catechism. I am rather disappointed that the Diocese of Honolulu uses it everywhere. 72.253.187.87 (talk) 23:53, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
