- Oppose MOS:SLASH we should avoid slashes whenever possible. WP:SUBPAGE this makes the appearance of a subpage, and messes up the associated talk pages, which will assume it is a subpage. Further, per internet wide usage, this is assumed to be a subpage in URL formulations. We can replace it with a DASH, like how other jurisdictions use an mdash. WP:OFFICIALNAMES we don't just use official names because they are official -- 67.70.35.44 (talk) 11:23, 11 October 2014 (UTC)
- Comment Maungarei is currently a redlink -- 67.70.35.44 (talk) 11:30, 11 October 2014 (UTC)
- Comment A slash is allowed "where a slash occurs in a phrase widely used outside Wikipedia, and a different construction would be inaccurate, unfamiliar, or ambiguous"; and we have a precedence with Aoraki / Mount Cook. Usually in NZ the general usage rapidly follows the official name (as we saw with Aoraki / Mount Cook). Haminoon (talk) 21:47, 11 October 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:30, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
- Comment Hi Necrothesp, do you have any evidence to support that this isn't a commonly-recognised name, and if so what is the commonly-recognised name? I live near the maunga and notice that Maungarei is used much more than Mt Wellington (which is mainly used to refer to the nearby suburb), with written sources usually using both names. Comment on name
[edit]Consensus seems to be that the new official double forms of this and other mountain names are not the commonly used names (it definitely seems very strange to non-New Zealanders), but Haminoon says that at least locally "Maungarei" is more often used. That does not seem like a case for the official name to me, but a case for using "Maungarei" as the article title. —innotata 23:24, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
- One of the problems with this page is that it covers both the suburb and the maunga. The suburb is only called "Mt Wellington", while the maunga uses both names. Would it be okay to split this into two pages? (although I'm not sure if the suburb is notable enough for a page). Haminoon (talk) 23:29, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
- Also the case for which name to use for the maunga is tricky because there aren't many written references. My perception is that Maungarei is used more verbally, but an elderly Pakeha may have a different perception. Haminoon (talk) 23:32, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
- Don't have much to say about the above, but defined geographic localities tend to be notable (WP:GEOLAND). —innotata 00:00, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
